good reminders
Whatever call a man may pretend to have, if he has not been called to holiness, he certainly has not been called to the ministry.
Charles H. Spurgeon
Temptation usually comes in through a door that has deliberately been left open.
Arnold Glasow
a great multitude from every nation
“The secular world tends to look at Iraq and say, well, it’s Muslim, and that’s just a fact, and any Christian influence would just be a form of Western imperialism. The Christian has to look at Iraq and see persons desperately in need of the gospel. Compelled by the love and command of Christ, the Christian will seek to take that gospel in loving and sensitive, but very direct, ways to the people of Iraq.”
Albert Mohler, Interview: Missionary Work in Iraq
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
Revelation 7:9
1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,
Romans 9:1-3
We all need the gospel. At the workplace, in my class, surrounded by spiritually dead people. Courage to share, love to proclaim.
Here’s a good article about evangelism.
ruined for anything else, but the gospel
The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world?
Soren Kierkegaard
I’ve posted this quote before, but it’s worth reminding myself of the costly call of discipleship.
If I could possibly fathom the depths of the Word of God, understanding all that there was in that wonderful tome, I would be ruined. I would be convicted of my utter failure to live as a child of God. If I understood these words as they were, I would be ruined for the fleeting joys and pleasures of this world for the sake of the greater joy in the gospel of Christ.
I am ruined! What I once loved, pornography, stealing applications, music, television, and movies; lying, cheating, portraying myself better than I actually am, are now all ruined for me. Ruined for the soul-satisfying, life-giving joy of the gospel. I have tasted and seen that the Lord is good.
