Addressed to the committee, published for the blog.

"And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will." (2 Timothy 2:24-26)

I was meeting with a friend this past week, and she encouraged me to deal with my arrogant desire to always be right (she didn't phrase it as strongly). In my heart, there is indwelling sin, a part of which is arrogance. In recent years, I've desired to learn more about our faith and the rich theology that the Reformers developed. However, in my pursuit of a deeper knowledge of Christ and Him crucified, I have projected and nursed an attitude of arrogance and stubbornness. I have been unwilling to hear out different perspectives of my friends, and reduced people into representative ideas that must be dismantled. I apologize and ask for your forgiveness for my arrogance.

The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world?

I've posted this quote before, but it's worth reminding myself of the costly call of discipleship.

If I could possibly fathom the depths of the Word of God, understanding all that there was in that wonderful tome, I would be ruined. I would be convicted of my utter failure to live as a child of God. If I understood these words as they were, I would be ruined for the fleeting joys and pleasures of this world for the sake of the greater joy in the gospel of Christ.

I am ruined! What I once loved, pornography, stealing applications, music, television, and movies; lying, cheating, portraying myself better than I actually am, are now all ruined for me. Ruined for the soul-satisfying, life-giving joy of the gospel. I have tasted and seen that the Lord is good.
