A Sermon for Men of Taste

Dear friends, I would have God’s people discern, but the discerning propensity ought not to destroy the enjoying faculty. I bless God I love the doctrines of grace, but I never considered the doctrines of grace to be like drawn swords with which to fight every man living.

    Questionable

A recent article on Bloomberg talked about how Bono profits from somewhat shady business practices. How can a man who preaches charity and how we should help the world engage in business practices that are questionable at best? I suppose it’s inevitable. We’ll meet people that inspire us to do better, to live better. Those same people will turn away and do something totally contrary to what you’ve been taught. An example is found not only in Bono, but in Martin Luther King, Jr. A close associate of his stated that King did engage in extramarital affairs. The leader of the civil rights movement engaged in extramarital affairs. How do we separate these acts of sin from the actions that led to the true freedom of an entire race? An easy answer is that we, as humans, are in a state of total depravity, prone to sin. I’m not looking for an easy answer as true as it may be. Does an affair take away from everything that King stood for? Does Bono the Businessman counteract the good that Bono the Philanthropist has done? Does a complete departure from the church take away from the man who taught me how to play the bass, and more importantly taught me by example, worship?

    Humbility (1 Timothy 1:15-17)

15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

    A Dream

My family took a trip to San Francisco with Lincoln and Calvin. We did a lot of shopping! We went to a coffee shop and talked with Lincoln’s friends who were getting married. My mom asked me if I could love people as much as they loved each other. Suddenly, I realized my father had been missing for a long time. Turns out he was kidnapped by the sewerfolk, rat monsters. Their ringleader said I would never save my dad. Lincoln, Calvin and I went out into the sewers of San Fran, but all we could find was a ransom letter. Since we didn’t have anymore money from the trip, we had to get all of our shopping goods to raise the capital for the ransom. There was a slight hitch in our plan because all of the things we bought were sent to a house in Pennsylvania, owned by a family friend who lived in Michigan. My mom had to call the family friend. She asked me, “Would you ever do something like that for a friend? We have a lot of friends who love us very much.” We stopped by the police station to notify the cops and to hatch a plan to capture the gang. We got to the house and it turns out all of the things we bought were all of the things I had. All the guitars, all the CDs, all the clothes. We had to sell it all. My mom asked me if I could give up all of these things to save a person, my dad. I agreed. It turns out the entire world was connected through a central vacuuming system, which in turn was owned by the gang that kidnapped my dad. They sent their furry white-coloured henchman named Blackie to torment me through the vacuum ducts.
